Evanescence is an American rock band founded in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1995 by singer/pianist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody.After recording private albums, the band released their first full-length album, Fallen, on Wind-up Records in 2003. Fallen sold more than 17 million copies worldwide[3] and helped the band win two Grammy Awards and seven nominations, as well as scoring No. 6 in CBS's "Top Bestselling Albums of the Last 10 Years" (2008). A year later, Evanescence released their first live album, Anywhere but Home, which sold more than one million copies worldwide. In 2006, the band released their second studio album, The Open Door, which sold more than five million copies.
The line-up of the group has changed several times: David Hodges leaving in 2002, co-founder Moody left in 2003 (mid-tour), bassist Will Boyd in 2006, followed by guitarist John LeCompt and drummerRocky Gray in 2007. The last two changes led to a hiatus, with temporary band members contributing to tour performances. Billboard ranked Evanescence No. 71 on the Best Artists of the Decade chart.
Announced in June 2009, the newest line-up of the band eventually returned with Evanescence, their self-titled third studio album, released on October 11, 2011. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200chart with 127,000 copies in sales.According to Examiner.com, the album also debuted at No. 1 on four other different Billboard charts; the Rock Albums, Digital Albums, Alternative Albums, and the Hard Rock Albums charts. The first single, "What You Want", was released on August 9, 2011. The second single, "My Heart Is Broken", was sent to radio stations in October 31, 2011. The band is currently on tour in promotion of their new album with other bands including The Pretty Reckless and Fair to Midland.
1995–2001: Formation and early Evanescence was founded by singer, pianist and songwriter Amy Lee and former lead guitarist and songwriter Ben Moody. The two met in 1994 at a youth camp in Little Rock, where Moody heard Lee playing "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" by Meat Loaf on the piano.Their first songs together were "Solitude" and "Give Unto Me", both written by Lee, and "Understanding" and "My Immortal", both written by Moody. The songs were edited by both artists, and they shared equal credit.
Two of Lee and Moody's songs were played on local radio stations, raising local awareness of the group and demand for a concert. The band eventually appeared live, and became one of the most popular acts in the area. After experimenting with band names, such as Childish Intentions and Stricken, they decided on Evanescence, which means "disappearance" or "fading away" (from the word evanesce, which means "to disappear").
The band released two EPs. The first is the self-titled Evanescence EP (1998), of which about 100 copies were made and distributed at the band's early live performances. The second is the Sound Asleep EP, also known as the Whisper EP (1999). There was also a third EP called Mystary EP. For their first full-length demo CD, Origin, about 2,500 copies were produced and sold to concert audiences. Origin and the EPs contain demo versions of some of the songs on their debut album, Fallen. During a radio interview, Lee and Moody encouraged fans to download the band's older songs from the Internet.

Formația a suferit schimbări în componență de mai multe ori. În 2003 pleacă cofondatorul Ben Moody, iar în 2007: chitaristul John LeCompt și toboșarul Rocky Gray. În prezent, Amy Lee e singurul membru original al formației. Ultimele două modificări au dus la o pauză, în care la spectacolele din turneu au contribuit membrii temporari ai trupei. În iunie 2009, Amy Lee a postat pe site-ul oficial Evanescence că trupa lucrează la cel de-al treilea album. Acesta va fi lansat la începutul toamnei din 2010.
Evanescence a fost fondată de solista și pianista Amy Lee și de chitaristul Ben Moody. Origin și EP-urile conțin versiunile demo ale unor piese de pe primul album Fallen. De exemplu, înregistrarea „My Immortal” găsită pe Fallen poate fi găsită și pe Origin, fără câteva elemente de acompaniament. Au fost produse doar 2550 de exemplare ale acestei înregistrări; Lee și Moody își încurajează fanii să descarce cântecele vechi ale formației de pe Internet.
În 2003, John LeCompt, Rocky Gray și William Boyd s-au alăturat lui Ben Moody și Amy Lee, toți lucrând la piesele Evanescence anterioare. Evanescence semnează un contract cu casa de discuri Wind-Up, și începe să lucreze la următorul album,Fallen. Single-ul de debut al formației Evanescence, „Bring Me To Life”, în care figurează Paul McCoy de la 12 Stones, a fost un hit global al formației și a atins poziția 5 în American Billboard Hot 100. Single-ul a condus formația spre primul loc înAnglia, unde a stat 4 săptămâni din iunie-iulie 2003. De asemenea cântecul a devenit oficial pentru WWE No Way Out. La fel de apreciat, „My immortal” ajunge pe poziția 7 în SUA și în topurile din Anglia, și ambele piese figurează pe coloana sonoră a filmului de acțiune Daredevil. La Grammy Awards 2004, formația câștigă la Best Hard Rock Performance și Best New Artist awards și a fost nominalizată la alte două categorii. Alte doua single de pe Fallen sunt „Going Under” (poziția 5 în US Modern Rock Tracks, și poziția 8 în Clasamentul Anglia) și „Everybody's Fool” (poziția 36 în US Modern Rock Tracksși poziția 23 în Clasamentul Anglia); ambele fiind promovate cu cate un videoclip.

Die Gruppe wurde von der Leadsängerin, Pianistin und Songschreiberin Amy Hartzler (geb. Amy Lee) und Ben Moody gegründet. Die beiden lernten einander in einem Jugendcamp in Arkansas kennen, wo Moody Lee den Song I’d Do Anything for Love von Meat Loaf auf dem Piano spielen hörte.
Als die beiden in der Liebe für Björk ihre Gemeinsamkeit entdeckten, begannen sie damit, gemeinsam Stücke zu schreiben – angefangen bei Solitude (von Amy Lee), gefolgt von Understanding (von Ben Moody), Give unto Me (von Amy Lee) und My Immortal (von Ben Moody). Die Songs wurden textlich und musikalisch von Lee modifiziert, was beiden gleich viel Anerkennung für die Kompositionen einbrachte. Bei den Überlegungen zum Bandnamen zogen Lee und Moody unter anderem „Childish Intentions“ und „Stricken“ in Betracht, entschieden sich dann aber für „Evanescence“ – „Dahinschwinden“. Amy Lee mochte den Namen, weil er mysteriös und dennoch hübsch klingt – also genau das, was sie bewirken wollte.[
Zwei der Lieder (Understanding und Give unto Me) fanden schließlich Aufnahme in das Programm lokaler Radiostationen, was ihnen auch Anfragen für Auftritte einbrachte. Bei einem Konzert 1998 veröffentlichten sie ihre erste, auf 100 Stück limitierte EP unter dem Titel Evanescence, im August 1999 gefolgt von einer zweiten, auf 50 Stück beschränkten EP mit Namen Sound Asleep. In einer Auflage von 2.500 Stück erschien am 2. November 2000 bei dem lokalen Label Bigwig Enterprises das erste Album Origin, das genau wie die beiden EPs und die nachfolgende Promo-EP Mystarynicht mehr erhältlich ist. Aus diesem Grund erklärten Lee und Moody auch in Interviews, dass die Fans dieses Material aus dem Internet herunterladen sollen.
In der ursprünglichen Zweierbesetzung trat Evanescence anfänglich gar nicht und später mit steigendem Erfolg nur selten auf. Erst mit der Aufnahme von John LeCompt, Rocky Gray und Will Boyd Anfang 2003 entstand ein Line-Up, das auch live auftreten konnte. Gemeinsam begannen sie das vorhandene Material zu überarbeiten, wobei sie während Masteringarbeiten zu einer neuen Demoaufnahme von Produzent Pete Matthews entdeckt wurden. Dieser verschaffte ihnen einen Plattenvertrag bei dem New Yorker Label Wind-Up Records.
Die Aufnahmen zu dem Album Fallen begannen. Zwei der für dieses Album vorbereiteten Lieder − Bring Me to Life und My Immortal − wurden für den Soundtrack von Daredevil verwendet, was den Durchbruch für Evanescence bedeutete. Bring Me to Life, bei dem Paul McCoy von 12 Stones als Gastmusiker singt, war ein weltweiter Hit und erreichte unter anderem Platz fünf in den US Billboard Hot 100 und Platz eins in den britischen Charts. Zusätzlich erhielt die Band bei den Grammy Awards 2004 neben der Ernennung zu „Beste neue Künstler“ für diese Single die Auszeichnung „Beste Hard-Rock-Darbietung“. My Immortal schaffte es auf Platz sieben in den US-Charts und Platz 13 in Großbritannien. Im März 2003 wurde schließlich das Album Fallen veröffentlicht. Es stieg auf Platz sieben in die US-Albumcharts ein, kletterte auf Platz drei hoch und verbrachte insgesamt über 100 Wochen in den Charts. Insgesamt verkaufte sich das Album über 14 Millionen Mal und brachte der Band in über 35 Ländern Platin- und Gold-Auszeichnungen ein.
Während einer anschließenden Europatour verließ Mitbegründer Ben Moody im Oktober 2003 plötzlich die Band. “By that time, it was just so clear that [Amy and I] have grown into two completely different people […] We didn't have any of the same desires for anything, especially not pertaining to our careers.” (deutsch: „Zu dieser Zeit war es einfach schon so eindeutig, dass [Amy und ich] zu zwei komplett unterschiedlichen Menschen geworden waren […] Wir hatten für nichts mehr die gleichen Wünsche, speziell unserer Karrieren betreffend“). Als man Amy darauf ansprach, sagte sie dazu nur: “It's actually been a relief. I don't mean that as a negative toward Ben, but we've all been through a lot and we were at breaking point. And the thing is, we'd gotten to a point that if something didn't change, we wouldn't have been able to make a second record.” (deutsch: „Es war eigentlich eine Erleichterung. Ich meine das nicht negativ Ben gegenüber, aber wir alle hatten viel durchgemacht und waren an einem Scheidepunkt. Und die Sache ist, wir waren an einem Punkt, an dem wir nicht mehr in der Lage gewesen wären, ein zweites Album zu machen, hätte sich nicht etwas geändert“). Nachfolger wurde Terry Balsamo von der Band Cold, die 2003 als Vorgruppe von Evanescence auftrat.
2004 veröffentlichte Evanescence nach längerem Touren in neuer Formation Anywhere but Home, eine DVD/CD-Kompilation, die neben einem Konzert in Paris auch etwas Hintergrundmaterial und ein bis dahin unveröffentlichtes Lied enthielt.
Zu den Einflüssen der Band zählen unter anderem Tori Amos, Björk, Soundgarden, Tool, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine und Type O Negative. Anfangs wurde Evanescence der christlichen Rock-Szene zugeordnet. Von dieser distanziert sich die Band allerdings seit der Veröffentlichung ihres Albums Fallen im Jahr 2003. Auch von der Gothic-Bewegung distanziert sich Evanescence:
„Wir sind keine Gothic-Kids. Unsere Musik ist aus einer Vielzahl von Quellen inspiriert, wir lieben Björk, aber mehr als alles andere stehen wir auf orchestrale Musik.“
